Chichester Stoneworks’ Apprentice takes 3rd place in UK Masonry Skills Challenge 2017
There were 27 apprentice masons from 9 colleges across England and Scotland competing in the UK Masonry Skills Challenge 2017. Each college picks 3 students to represent them in the competition. There were two heats, a southern and a northern, the southern heat was held at the Building Crafts College in London which Emma Sheridan from Chichester Stoneworks attended.
Competitors were given a scale drawing, a piece of stone and the materials necessary for making moulds and templets. The moulds and templets must be made full size and then using these the stone is worked as accurately as possible by hand.
The scores of each competitor across the two heats are calculated individually and Emma came 3rd overall. Well done to Emma – great achievement!
The competition is part of the qualifying procedure for Skillbuild 2017. The top placed 8 competitors in this UK Skills Challenge go forward to compete in the UK Skillbuild Final which is held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham in November 2017, so Emma shall be competing there later this year.
We wish Emma luck in this next stage.
